From approximately the late 1940s through the mid 1950s, the sound of the steel non-pedal guitar was intrinsically linked to Country music. In 1954, Bud Isaacs pedal steel playing on Webb Pierce’s hit recording of Slowly sent players scrambling to the tool shed to jerry rig their guitars with homemade pedals.  Eventually, the sound of the pedal steel guitar became one of the signature sounds of Country music. Despite this, there’s a ton of great Country music that can be played on the non-pedal instrument.

Note: Midi audio usually sounds closer to a keyboard than a steel guitar but it is useful for demonstrating the rhythms, feel and overall intent of an arrangement or musical passage. Make this music come alive on your steel guitar!
