Bossa nova music was developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Bossa simplified the rhythms found in traditional Brazilian samba and Choro music and combined them with harmonies found in cool jazz and classical music. Composer Antonio Carlos Jobim and singer/guitarist João Gilberto are the key founders of this style. The lush harmonies, beguiling rhythms and beautiful melodies of bossa nova work wonderfully with the voice-like tone and sustain of lap steel guitar. I’ve had a lot of fun arranging these tunes for lap guitar and I hope you enjoy playing these beautiful, timeless songs.

Note: the audio examples are computer-generated MIDI versions of examples and songs. MIDI reflects a pale approximation of all the subtle nuances of expression that the steel guitar offers. It will, however, give you a feeling for the the melody,  rhythms and expression intended.
