A Taste of Honey is a pop standard written by Bobby Scott and Ric Marlow. It was originally composed in 3/4 time for the 1960 Broadway version of the British play A Taste of Honey.  Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass arranged it in 4/4 with a catchy walking bassline that propelled the song forward. The most salient musical aspect of the soing is its use of a chord progression often called “the minor cliche progression” (vi, vi(M7), vi7, vi6), which appears in many songs, most notably perhaps, in “My Funny Valentine” and the Beatles classic “Michelle.” 

This arrangment was influenced in equal parts by Herb Alpert’s arrangement and the performance of electric finger style guitar master Scotty Anderson whose cool walking bass line I cribbed without shame.

The song lays out perfectly in D minor tuning - a very easy one-string tweak from the standard open D tuning.
