E9th Tuning (Low to High) D, E, F#, G#, B, E

T he E9th tuning is an easy change using the same string gauges as the standard C6th tuning. The character  of the open tuning and the key both change - from a 6th chord in the key of C, to a dominant 9th chord in the of key of E. You gain a major triad on the top three strings plus dominant 7th and 9th chords on the lower strings.

L eon McAullife’s importance in the history of steel guitar and Western Swing music cannot be over emphasized. He virtually wrote the book for how a steel guitar should sound in a Western Swing band, pioneered many of the classic tunings, and wrote several instrumentals that became steel guitar standards. Blue Guitar Stomp is credited to Cal Smith and recorded in 1927 by Clifford Hayes’ Louisville Stompers. The tune was covered by a number of bands over the years. Leon McAuliffe and his Western Swing band cut their version for Columbia in July, 1951. Structurally, Blue Guitar Stomp is a 12-bar blues. McAulliffe’s phrasing really makes it swing and the solo included in my arragement is a pastiche of some of the licks McAulifee would typically play on this type of tune.
