CALIFORNIA DREAMIN' - OPEN D WEISSENBORN OR DOBRO (PDF Digital Download)
CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’ was written by John and Michelle Phillips and first recorded by Barry McGuire. The Mamas & the Papas version was released in 1965 and remains one of the most iconic pop songs of the 1960s. Jazz legend, Bud Shank played the famous alto flute solo that is paraphrased in my arrangement. This version is an interpretation of the tune, rather than an exact transcription of the melody and harmonies.
Open D tuning is probably the most popular tuning for Weissenborn and Dobro after Open G. The array of notes in Open D allow you to create unusual chord combinations and interesting sustained tonal clusters that would be difficult or impossible in standard guitar tuning.
OPEN D MAJOR TUNING (Notes & Scale Steps):
STRING # 6 5 4 3 2 1

Note: Midi audio usually sounds closer to a keyboard than an acoustic steel guitar but it is useful for demonstrating the melody, rhythms, feel and overall intent of an arrangement or musical passage. Make this music come alive on your Dobro, Weissenborn or electric steel guitar!
