Manoir Des Mes Reves is one of Django Reinhardt’s most beautiful and beloved compositions. The song’s origin was unusual. Amidst the horrors of WWII, Django dreamed one night he was in a grand Chateau’ nestled in a never-ending forest. It was midnight, and he was playing glorious music on a large pipe organ. Manoir Des Mes Reves (Castle of My Dreams) was the result.
My arrangement of “Manoir” in A6th tuning was inspired by Django’s final recording of the song in April, 1953 - just one month before the guitarist’s sudden death at the age of 43. This is a straight forward harmonization of his beautiful melody with a Django style single note flourish at the end.
The C6th version of the song was re-arranged for lap steel from a standard guitar arrangement played by seminal jazz guitarist, Joe Pass on his 1961 LP For Django. I’ve simplified some of Pass’s chord substitutions and added a coda based on some of the brilliant single note lines that Pass spun out so effortlessly.

Note: Midi audio usually sounds closer to a keyboard than a steel guitar but it is useful for demonstrating the rhythms, feel and overall intent of an arrangement or musical passage. Make this music come alive on your steel guitar!
