ARRANGED FOR LAP STEEL IN TABLATURE + STANDARD NOTATION (audio sample below)
M auna Kea is a volcano on the island of Hawaii. Its peak is 4,207.3 m above sea level, making it the highest point in the state of Hawaii. The song Mauna Kea is essentially, one long Hawaiian turn around that’s harmonized via a mix of chorda, dyad and single note effects. This arrangment capitaslizes on the rich dominant voicings available on the E13th tuning. My arrangment is largely faithful to Jerry Byrd’s take on the tune.
E13th tuning
E13th tuning is a powerful chord melody tuning. There are several variations on the tuning used in both Hawaiian and Western Swing steel guitar playing. This inversion facilitates the beautiful dominant chord strums that Byrd used throughout this arrangment. Having both the flat seventh and the sixth in the tuning make the open strings an E13th chord.
