ARRANGED FOR LAP STEEL IN STANDARD NOTATION & TABLATURE (audio sample below)
E9th Tuning (Low to High) D, E, F#, G#, B, E
T he E9th tuning is an easy change using the same string gauges as the standard C6th tuning. The character of the open tuning and the key both change - from a 6th chord in the key of C, to a dominant 9th chord in the of key of E. You gain a major triad on the top three strings plus dominant 7th and 9th chords on the lower strings.
N ight Train is the quintessential big band riff-based twelve-bar blues. It has been recorded by many artists, including funk icon James Brown, jazzers Oscar Peterson and Jimmy Smith, The Dirty Dozen Brass band and even twang guitar icon Mickey Baker. It makes a fun song for lap steel in E9th tuning. My arrangement alternates fully-voiced 9th chords with two-note chords, or dyads, to harmonize the song’s riff-based melody.
