SAND - D9th Tuning - by Andy Iona (Arranged by Andy Volk) (PDF Digital Download)
ARRANGED FOR LAP STEEL IN STANDARD NOTATION & TABLATURE (audio sample below)
D9th Tuning (Low to High) E, C, F#, A, C, E
While Sand is traditionally played in the B11th tuning (low to High) B, D#, F#, A, C#, E, it lays out quite well in D9th. T he D9th tuning is an easy one-string, 1/2 step tweak from the standard C6th tuning. By lowering string #4 from G to F#, we change both the character of the open tuning and the key - from a 6th chord in the key of C, to a dominant 9th chord in the of key of D.
SAND was written by Andrew (Andy) Aiona Long, one of the most influential musicians in Hawaiian music. The song has a rich dominant chord flavor that conjures images of a tropical paradise.
