For Electric lap steel.
Close to You, originally titled “(They Long to Be) Close to You)” is a song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The song was first recorded by Richard Chamberlain and released as a single in 1963. The 1970 version recorded by Carpenters with instrumental backing by L.A. studio musicians from the Wrecking Crew became a hit and the best know version. My arrangement for lap steel closely follows Richard Carpenter’s arrangement from the Carpenter’s recording. As instrumental music, it has a strong melody and memorable hook that fits very well on C6th lap steel. My version, like the original sheet music, is notated in 12/8 time.

Note: Midi audio usually sounds closer to a keyboard than a steel guitar but it is useful for demonstrating the rhythms, feel and overall intent of an arrangement or musical passage. Make this music come alive on your steel guitar!
