CRAZY ARMS by Ralph Mooney (arrangement: Andy Volk)

CRAZY ARMS is the quintessential honky tonk steel guitar tune. Ray Price’s 1956 recording helped him establish himself as a star. This was the recording that introduced his new Texas shuffle sound of fiddle, pedal steel guitar, walking electric bass and swinging 4/4 rhythm. The song established Price’s sound and became a beloved Country music standard. Crazy Arms is a favorite of Country pedal steel players. The hallmark of the pedal steel is the use of stationary notes played against bending notes that go either up, down or both. This arrangement uses moving tones against stationary notes, slides and behind-the-bar bends to imitate some of these typical pedal steel moves.

Note: Midi audio usually sounds closer to a keyboard than a steel guitar but it is useful for demonstrating the rhythms, feel and overall intent of an arrangement or musical passage. Make this music come alive on your steel guitar!
