EAST OF THE SUN (AND WEST OF THE MOON) is a standard tune written in 1934 that continues to be popular today with many jazz musicians; Diana Krall’s swinging version on her Live in Paris DVD is just one recent notable version. My arrangement’s introduction uses the same chords as Krall’s intro.
The B11th tuning is essentially a detuned version of the A6th tuning popularized by Leon McAuliffe and other Western Swing playan be difficult to conceptualize because it combines two different tonalities: A major and B dominant - in two different keys: A and B. In the open strings, we have a major 6th in the key of A on top, and in the middle aners beginning in the 1930s. The top four open strings are identical to the A6th tuning. However, B11th offers lower register, beautiful voicings of B dominant 7th, 9th and 11th chords. In general, slant positions are a bit less common in B11th than some other tunings. The six-string version of the tuning commonly uses either a B note or a C# on string six.
