Midnight at the Oasis” was written in 1973 by guitarist David Nichtern and recorded by Maria Muldaur for her self-titled album. The lyrics are a pastiche of Middle Eastern and movie cliches, coupled with suggestive teasing about a desert love affair.,
Among musicians, the song is well known for Amos Garrett’s mind-bending guitar fills and his solo that seemed to effortlessly combine a steel guitar and a standard guitar in a jazzy, evocative dance on the fretboard.
This tune and Garrett’s note-for-note solo were quite challenge to transcribe but both the song and Garrett’s solo work very well in the B1th tuning.
B11th tuning is essentially a detuned version of the A6th tuning popularized by Leon McAuliffe and other Western Swing players. It an be difficult to conceptualize because it combines two different tonalities: A major and B dominant - in two different keys: A and B. The top four open strings are identical to the A6th tuning. However, B11th also offers lower register, beautiful voicings of B dominant 7th, 9th and 11th chords. In general, slant positions are a bit less common in B11th than some other tunings.
