Willie Nelson‘s song “Night Life ” became a hit for Ray Price, who started to use it as the introduction in his shows as well as using it as the title of his now classic LP. The song is now considered a country standard and a landmark in American popular music. My arrangement for C6th lap steel was influenced by Buddy Emmons’ famous pedal steel version as well as the original sheet music plus a beautiful non-pedal arrangement played by English steeler Mick Hern. Like Emmons’ version, the melody in this arrangement is often paraphrased or altered from the published melody. The well-known Emmons intro uses a variation of a common Jazz turn-around known among musicians as “The Lady Byrd” turn-around, in deference to its use in composer Tadd Dameron’s Jazz standard, “Lady Bird.”  Night Life is a steel guitar standard for good reason and makes a perfect tune for C6th players.
