ROLLING SKY by Speedy West and & Jimmy Bryant (Arranged by Andy Volk)
Jimmy Bryant’s blazing Telecaster combined influences from the fiddle breakdowns he’d heard growing up in Georgia with swing, bebop and country music. Speedy West’s influences included western swing, country, Hawaiian music, big band, waltz and polkas - all melded with his own potent musical imagination. Rolling Sky was recorded at Capitol Records in Los Angles in 1957 and was relased in both 45 rpm and 33 rpm formats, and appears on numerous reissue compliations well into the CD era. For lap steel guitarists, It is one of the most acessible of the many great tunes that Jimmy and Speedy recorded. While Speedy likely used A6th tuning on the original recording, the song arranges quite well in standard C6th tuning and my chord melody version sticks as close to the way Speedy phrased as I could get. For me, this tune conjures up a cool looking 1950s car pulling an Airstream trailer through an amazing Southwest landscape. Enjoy!
