SOUTH OF HONOLULU was composed by early steel virtuoso Eddie Bush and guitarist Mel Peterson. Dick McIntire‘s version recorded with his band The Harmony Hawaiians is likely the definitive performance. The real challenges in playing a tune like this one are less technical and more relating to expression; can we create a singing, natural-sounding vibrato and achieve that relaxed, swinging vibe that makes vintage Hawaiian steel music so attractive?
The F#9 tuning is related to the earlier C#m tuning, innovations that players created to be able to play the 9th, 6th, diminshed and augmented chords that were increasingly finsing their way into the popular music of the 1930s.
F#9 tuning (low to high) F# A# E G# C# E
