St. Louis Blues is one of the most enduring songs in American popular music. It was composed in 1914 by W. C. Handy. The song was one of the first blues songs to succeed as a pop song and remains a fundamental part of many jazz musicians’ repertoire. “Saint Louis Blues” has multiple complementary and contrasting strains, similar to classic ragtime compositions. It was one of the earliest songs to alternate between a Latin rhythm (Habanera) and standard 4/4 fox-trot (swing) feel. Jerry Byrd record his arrangement with the String Dusters on the Mercury label in 1950. Byrd likely played the song a bit differetly each time and, as this arangement demonstrates, there are many possibilities for theme and variation improvisation within the song. Byrd’s arrangement starts with the Tango-flavored Chrous then segues to the traditional swing blues feel for the Verse. St. Louis Blues is a fun song to play and lays out perfectly in the C6th tuning. Enjoy!
